The University of Copenhagen actively influences
current and future generations through excellent research, education and
co-operation. UCPH is one of the highest ranked universities in Europe and is
Denmark´s oldest university, founded in 1479. Today, the University has 37,000
students and 9,000 employees affiliated across six faculties: humanities, law,
natural sciences, social sciences, health sciences and theology. ku.dk/english.
The Department of Drug Design
and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of
Copenhagen is pleased to announce that a PhD fellowship will be available from
1 August 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter. The PhD fellowship is part of
the interdisciplinary research programme "Plants for a Changing
World" funded by the UCPH Excellence Programme for Interdisciplinary
Research. The application deadline is 26 May 2014.
Applications are invited for the
three-year fellowship from applicants who hold or expect to hold a master´s
degree in a field relevant to the project.
Background
The programme undertakes research in the societal acceptance, economic, legal
and ethical aspects of using genetically modified plants and chemical agents
for cultivating plants in environments becoming increasingly hostile due to
e.g. climate changes. The programme also includes research in and development
of genetically modified plants and chemical agents enabling cultivation of
crops in such environments. The project consists of six work packages (WP),
WP1: Economic preferences, decisions and willingness to change, WP2: The
precautionary principle and the principle of benefit sharing, WP3: Legitimate
policy choices, WP4: Biofortification, WP5: Abiotic stress: Soil salinity, and
WP6: Biotic stress: Combating microbial infections.
The offered fellowship is part
of WP6.
Study description
The key tasks of the PhD study include: Synthesis, isolation and
characterization of small molecules for antifungal activity in plants and for
the ability of the molecules to close stomatal pores in the presence of
pathogens. Templates for the synthetic work will include small molecules with
some activity for fungal or plant membrane H+-ATPase or natural products
isolated from extracts of media showing some pump inhibitory activity.
Required Qualifications
The applicant must have:
obtained a Master´s degree in a relevant subject area prior to the starting
date
